Back-to-school preparation is here. Which means shopping for school supplies and new clothes for your kids will be inevitable. And with tax-free weekend on the way, you might want to take advantage of the deals coming your way because budgeting is definitely something to consider once you find out how much families spend on back-to-school shopping.

According to the National Retail Federation, parents who have kids in elementary school through high school spend an average of $696.70 on school supplies. Families who have children in college are expected to spend $976.78.  With that, here are some tips to save a couple of bucks on back-to-school shopping.

1.  Lists are your friends. Use them as a guide for your budget. The plus side to this is that teachers or schools will often send their students a list of what they need for the school year. Schools usually send students a list of what they'll need for the upcoming school year. The Target and Walmart's websites even have your back! Check out their back-to-school shopping lists.

2.  Check what you have home. Inventory will help you avoid purchasing items you already have. Start with the easy things like pens, pencils and notebooks.

3.  Coupons are money-savers. Check out the store coupons and shop sales. Plus, start shopping tomorrow when tax-free weekend begins!

4.  Electronics are pricey. Try buying used or refurbished items.  Check websites like eBay, Amazon, Apple, and Dell for their refurbished deals.

Lastly, make sure you pass these tips along to your kids! Teaching them financial strategies at a young age will definitely come in handy while you're out and about buying their essential items.
